Light frost a few days ago- ended my basil. Quite late for us, but not unheard of. Our first frost date is in late August -if we get past that without a frost we can go for weeks, and that’s what happened this year.

We are forecast to have first frost on Wednesday, Oct. 16th, which is pretty much around our normal time in southern Indiana, 6B. I am ready for it to come this year. The wildlife and drought this year have made gardening somewhat miserable. Saw my first woolly worm this morning and he was mostly brown with very little black on his hairy little body. Don’t know if there is any truth to the stories about their ability to forecast winter weather, but I believe more brown and less black is supposed to portend a milder winter. I hope so.

28F here. About normal i suppose. Things that make it will be fine for another week or 2. 16F was the coldest local reading in low areas to the east. The bluff (600 feet above me) was 32F. Always warmer up there on cold/clear/calm nights.

I have around 150 figs still on my Chicago Hardy… trying to ripen.

Picked 23 yesterday evening. I would like to get a bunch more of those dehydrated.

We got 38-39F this morning… and it is supposed to warm back up … with lows in the 40s and 50s soon.

The latest I ever saw our first hard frost was Dec 3. I picked figs and raspberries that day.

It usually comes in Nov… but occasionally late October.

We’ve had 2 prior nights below 32F this year, but last night was our first hard frost with 25.3F @ 6:54am.

Here in Macon County, in the mountains of Western North Carolina, it is 27 degrees this morning with heavy frost covering everything. Our first freeze and frost of the year. In addition to the vegetable garden being largely closed for business now, our Nantahala Raspberries might be done too. Too bad on the raspberries - these fall producing canes are in their first year and only started ripening 3 weeks ago or so.

We got hard frost last night, was 28 degrees this morning right before sunrise. Put a hurting on the peaches but everything else looks ok. I brought in my baby fig starts and big momma aloe vera will set them back out tomorrow.
