First time homebuyer, pond in the backyard?

Hello everyone,
I am looking to finally purchase a home and there is a pond bordering the far end of the backyard. Does this change anything in terms of gardening. Do I have to have water loving plants across the border?
Thank you!

Nope, if anything it makes the rest of your yard drain better.
Maybe add swales leading to it if you’re worried about ponding in other spots
Things like pawpaws love being planted next to the water

We have a small 1.52 acre pond. We depressed the pathways to lead rain back to the pond. It works most of the time except Hurricane season if it gives more then the annual heavy rainfall. We had 6 inches of standing water in most of the yard after 4-5 days of heavy rains. Which is a lot of water considering the pond has 14 foot banks and it still overflowed.

Great! Ive also been thinking of adding some pawpaws, looks like it will be a great choice if we get the house. Thanks!

Thank you! Hopefully we don’t get too much standing water during the rainy season.

good luck with your purchase! I’d love to have a big pond.
I put in a small pond with a preformed shell last summer shaded by the pine tree next to my garden and I really enjoy it. I relied heavily on advice from oxponds.com to design the filtration - because my pond is small a simple bog filter made from a blue barrel works very well, it keeps my water crystal clear and healthy. My little pond is stocked with comets and minnows and it has a visiting frog and an eastern painted turtle. I put a bench next to it so I can sit and watch them while I am working in my garden - it is very peaceful. Highly recommend.

The beauty of natural earth bottom ponds is that if there’s ever anywhere near the pond you wish was a bit more above the water table, you can just dig dirt out of the pond to use for raising any low areas outside the pond. Your pond gets deeper (great for fish) and your ground gets dryer!

So jelly. I want to add one once i remove a bunch of concrete. depending on the size you can use it for irrigation which is awesome.

Plus lets you grow some swamp plants.

Check out its flood risk though and look into flood insurance

You don’t necessarily need water-loving plants everywhere, but they do help with filtration if you decide to put fish in there.

I recently got inspired to stock my pond after following yonny’s ‘Koi Journey’ blog. I used Next Day Koi to get my fish delivered, and it was a smooth process.

They were the first online retailer to offer a 14-day worry-free guarantee, which gave me a lot of confidence as I was starting out. Their variety is way better than what you’d find at a local garden center.
