Florida Hickory

Anyone familiar with Florida Hickory, Carya floridana? I would like to know at what age it starts to produce nuts? I’ve been looking online but haven’t found anything.

Thanks
Dean

Hickory is pretty consistent with 15 to 20 years for first nuts from seed grown trees. Juvenile phase is a huge hurdle for breeders.

Pecan is a bit different as some selections have been made for precocious bearing. It still takes 10 or more years for most but some trees produce nuts in 5 to 7 years. Pecan on average grows about twice as fast as an average hickory of other species.

Do you have sand hickory growing?

I don’t. I just saw the name ‘scrub hickory’ and thought maybe it was smaller and might start producing sooner. I would plant some if it were true.
