Forcing a Nectarine to turn into a fan

Hi, I bought two 18 month old Nectarine trees (Humboldt and John Rivers) that arrived as bared roots in October. I thought I’d save money and order two bush trees to train into fans - at the time I didn’t know at the time that this would make it difficult to train them as fans and didn’t learn that I should have cut the trees down when they were dormant in order to force dormant buds to grow at the base. I’m currently trying to force the trees to bud lower down by bending the trees - like you would if one side of the fan was becoming to dominant to force the other side to grow more (if that makes any sense).

My question is, does anyone have any idea if this would work?

Its nice you started with verities you wanted. my Cherry fan started with rootstock and it did not go as planned.

Right now your bending them for a cordon. You could just keep going with that.

Your buds are dormant which is good. If you want to get it to fan you need to make sure to keep any terminal buds cut off.

Cut a notch above each dorment bud to encourage it to branch

Oh wow! Thank you so much for your advice! It was really helpful! I’d not thought about cutting a notch about the dormant buds, so I’ve given it a go, fingers crossed it works. Yes, I’m very excited to get them going, we have a nice sheltered wall that gets full sun, so a fan seems like the best bang for my buck. Do you think this is enough of a notch? I’ve also attached a picture of the wall.

This is Luisa plum that someone with a whole lot more time and skill than I do made into a wonderful work of art.

That is spectacular! Oh the things I would do with more space. Fruit tree art is absolutely enticing.

Phenomenal! I can only hope that May fans come anywhere near close to this.

I would go deeper, the green cambium layer could easily reconnect.

Thank you, it had started healing on the John Rivers already. I’ve deepened. The notches on both. Fingers crossed that I’ll be able to share some growth in a few weeks.
