I have a four year old Carmine Jewel. I’m in NC, 7b, and it just started blooming yesterday. However, there’s a light freeze warning (29F) for the next two nights Thurs/Fri night. Do I need to try to protect it? Thanks!!
those are hardy to z2. i wouldnt sweat it.
I was wondering if the frost would affect the blossoms ability to set fruit maybe? If not, great!
At 28 degrees, cherries will lose 10% of their partial or full blossoms. At 24-25 degrees, they will lose most of the partial or full blossom.
There is a helpful freeze temperature chart with sample images from MSU Extension titled “Critical Spring Temperatures for Tree Fruit Bud Development Stages”
Probably not carmine jewel cherries.
Oh thanks, that’s very specific and very helpful!
of the sour cherries , U of SK sour cherries are 2 zones hardier than montmorency and one more than northstar. im assuming that increased hardiness is also carried into its blooming considering they are
reliably grown commercially in z2 Canada.
