Frozen Ground to budding trees in days

This year has been unusual even for Kansas. I usually graft trees and plant trees in the spring but this year there is not time for everything. The ground was frozen solid and the trees are leafing out. The real question is winter really over? Was wondering if anyone else had unusual weather? We went from winter to mid 70’s within a few short days.

I hear you Clark. Supposed to be 74F today and 78F tomorrow. The NWS says that’s 25 degrees above normal. Supposed to cool back down after that, but the trees are definitely waking up fast.

Same here in Omaha, NE. The weather have been warm in the 60’s-70’s for a few weeks. The ground is workable and the Honey berries leafed out and the Asian pears starting to buds out. The weatherman predicted around 3-24-15 the overnight weather is going to be around 24F or 26F.

We had about 3 days of 40’s mid week last week with about 1.5-2 ft of snow on the ground. We will have high in the 40 F again today till Tues. Otherwise, it is around mid 20 to mid 30. Not sure how the trees will react.

In the eastern Midwest we had a fairly typical and cold winter. A week of 40 degree temps have yet to thaw the ground. The snow is almost gone. Still below freezing every night, or almost every night.
Overall we were way below normal temps for the winter. Record setting cold many days. The Great Lakes froze near 90% a rare occurance that has now happened two years in a row.
All winter the ice breakers had to go and rescue freighters. It was a common occurance.
-16 was the coldest here and about 35 miles north of me it got down to -24 F. I never have seen it that cold in my lifetime. I guess long term this trend is expected to continue due to the inactivity of the sun. The jet stream saved you guys in the west, you might not be as lucky next winter, and it may still drop and freeze you out this year.
Freezing temps at night are coming back, waiting for this long and cold never ending winter to be finished! No bud swell at all here, except on stuff I had in the garage.
