My understanding is that if you “encourage” them to experience the shock via some tinfoil tabs with a bit of peanut butter they are trained to stay away.

Sounds like a good idea to me using peanut butter. I fire up the wire a couple of weeks before needing it. My opinion is that they bump into the wire early and just go away. The low wire was only intended from raccoons and opossums but I think that it also helps with rabbits. I also use a timer and only run it when it’s dark outside.
