Goldrush Apple. What’s happening?
I’m no expert, but the leaves don’t look too bad to me. The apple looks like the tree is aborting the fruitlet; when does your June drop usually happen? You have some pretty lively, well-watered leaves on the same branch so I can’t think why the fruit would dessicate unless the tree is dropping it.
How big is the tree, and is this happening to the whole tree or just one small branch?
Could be June drop, but the browning leaves nearby are what threw me off. It’s only a second-year tree. One other small branch on the opposite side of the tree did the same thing, and I actually removed that just to be safe. The rest of the tree looks fine.
I don’t know what the cause is but I would break off the spur as well as removing the apple. Then check on the limb for more signs of problems but I’m guessing the damage is local.
When I see spurs like that, I break off the limb about a foot down… and hope I caught it soon enough. Fireblight
That’s what I ended up doing. And then I threw the branches in the fire pit.
I second fireblight.
Goldrush is considered “moderately resistant” to fire blight.
So here’s a question: can carbaryl burn leaves? I sprayed some liquid Sevin (the old carbaryl type) on a couple things, and today there is a small but noticeable number of leaves, where mostly the outer edges of the leaves are green but shriveled.
Yes, can cause leaf injury.
