Fuchsia berries: are they worth growing?

This is one plant i don’t mind the little sparrows gorging themselves on.

I just bought a bunch and am reluctant to try the berries.

I’ve noticed they only produce fruit when pollinated. No pollination = no berries

Think it depends on the type of fuchsia also, maybe they all can possibly make a berry. But some types make delicious berries. I have a “speciosa” from OGW which is flowering now, I’m looking forward to the berries. I have another I think “grandiosa”? It died to ground in winter but is coming back and yet to flower.

I have 11 different types, don’t know the names of any, but they all make berries for me. I’ve never tried them from these guys though

The species Fuschia splendens is supposed to be one of the best tasting ones. Supposed to have large fruit (~2") that ripen white. A shame all the fuschias have tiny seeds that I can never get to germinate.

That’s the one I have other than speciosa. So many plants are named speciosa and deliciosa so I forgot.

Just tried one fuchsia berry from one of my plants.

I feel like it is poisonous haha. Found out I’m allergic and it left a weird tingling sensation on my tongue…

I will leave these for the birds :bird:

Have you tried the variety Jim Gerdemann from One Green World? I knew the Gerdemanns and went to their nursery/jungle when they were still alive. (By that time they were pretty old). They lived near Yachats, which is cooler and wetter. His variety may work for you and it’s delicious.

I looked at a couple big box stores this weekend but didn’t like the fuchias they had…

How long have you had this plant? If it is recently from a store they may have treated it with something since these are generally just used to look pretty.

Ms Melon, I have had the same reaction with Fuchsia fruit when I have tasted various unknown cultivars. I am not sure if it is an allergic reaction, or if it is just certain chemicals in the fruit which can be irritating to certain peoples tongues and mucous membranes…

I have heard others describe it as “catching in the back of the throat”. A bit scratchy and irritating.

I have only tasted the large, fat berries of decorative Fuchsia magellanica hybrids. Awful taste! These pretty varieties are only bred for their blooms, not their fruit. The Fuchsia societies across Europe almost never discuss or care about fruit quality.

Try growing F. boliviana or splendens. They are rated highly by many. I am growing several species here now and I am excited and apprehensive to try
