Research is making great strides with antagonistic bacteria to control fireblight both in lab and commercial trials. However, getting approval for effective bacteria control faces great scrutiny over introducing something worse that could wreck havoc in other parts of the ecosystem. Which makes working towards selective breeding the best solution for making commercial production of apples profitable in areas that favor fireblight.

When you read “genetic markers” I recommend caution.

The basic problem is the present-day automated lab equipment used for genetic marker tests does not check that the markers are next to something meaningful. Instead, the equipment reports the length of the marker segment.
