Fuyu in intense hot temperatures

Just thought I’d share what happens to persimmons when it gets 115° in the backyard. Normally I shade them a but but not this year. It’s a young tree 7’ so I counted about 20 persimmons I’ll have to toss out. I don’t want to take them off yet because they’re protecting other persimmons. But I can smell persimmon pudding when around the tree so afraid it will attract pests. I’ve observed several other unprotected trees more established and there’s are fried too.

Wow, that’s brutal. Most fruit trees don’t like 115F and the fruit itself even less. They’re predicting those temperatures in the heart of CA stone fruit growing region around Reedley. I saw 118 forecast for Medford OR where they grow a lot of pears. Here even 102 can burn pear leaves. It happens most years when it gets that hot. In 20 years here 103 is as hot as it’s gotten. I’m south of all of CA but at 4500ft elev. so that saves us.

Wow I figured you’re in a hotter zone. Must be very nice there. What’s funny is the Asian Pear tree has handled the heat with no apparent problems and I put that in about the same time as the persimmon. I did protect the pears exposed to direct sunlight with organzas.

We’re looking at ~103F for one day -hot for us, but not our record (107). Not happy about it but at least now the days are getting shorter and we’ll slowly start to see the trend reverse in another month.

Well at least you have some good fishing there! My best fishing memories came from visiting Montana. 103° should be a piece of cake.
