Fuyu new growth only yellow this year zone 7

My Fuyu persimmons are both 3 years in the ground. Last year we got one persimmon per tree. Fruit drop is crazy! But, my real concern is that some of the new growth this year is yellow and shriveled. The main part of the tree looks healthy, but I’m worried about this odd new growth. Any ideas?

Welcome to GrowingFruit!

Fruit drop on young Fuyu/Jiro persimmons is normal in my area. The same is true of yellowish color in new spring growth. But your new leaves – even those that have greened up in the background have a lot of physical damage and curling consistent with insects.

@Everythingtoxs welcome.

I have 3rd leaf Fuyu and its new leaves are notably more yellow than Hachiya of same age so it also looks normal to me.

The curls on leaves are probably due to persimmon psyllid. I also noticed the leaves are also very brittle so wind gust can leave them with tears. My tree looks like yours, and even more yellow.

Thank you, is there anything to be done?

For the persimmon psyllid, you could manually try to squish, or spray with light soapy water.
For the yellow leaves, it’s always greened up for me as season progressed.

Where are you located? The persimmon psyllid is only an issue in native American Persimmon (D. virginiana) regions.

Zone 7 in in the US.

If you’re in east coast, it’s likely Persimmon psyllid.

Close enough probably. In Alabama. I’ll keep a close eye out. Thanks all!!
