Gala & Lodi; cross-pollination partners?

Costco had trees on sale this morning. Picked up a Gala and a Lodi (Malus Pumila) tree. Both about 5’-6’ tall, for $35/piece. Will these trees cross-pollinate?

I think the only other apple tree was a Red Delicious.

Thank you!

Will this help?

If they bloom at the same time, or if there is a flowering crab in someone’s yard nearby…then no worries.
(A few varieties are triploid…such as Winesap…and Arkansas Black…and won’t pollinate anything.)

…including themselves!

Of all the worries of growing fruit one that actually is excessive IME is pollination of apples. In your zone, most varieties have enough bloom at any given time to pollinate each other. As it gets warmer further south the situation changes as there is more space between early and late bloomers.

It baffles me that the literature hasn’t caught up with this. I’ve never seen mention that a longer growing season exacerbates the problem.

Yes, my Granny Smith and Niedzwetzkyana have dropped petals. Others have not opened up.

That’s interesting and suggests to me it is more about being farther south than relative zone.

Apples in Z6 up here are only swelling with only apricots beginning to open.

The later the spring, the narrower the range of early to late flowering, apparently.
