Next is a Comice pear, I think, and it has leaves turning red, mostly on the South side, and it could be normal…I don’t know…
Next is a Hazel tree with bacterial blight, I think, but it looks different on this Dorris cultivar from OSU (Oregon) than it does on the native hazels.
It and the local native Beaked Hazel started out like this:
One last issue is this gummosis on my new cherry tree. Under the largest/lowest glob I found a hole and stuck a big pin in it. Under the top globs I found nothing.
This is a whole lot of separate issues. Anyone that wants to advise me on any of these problems please do so. I would appreciate it.
On the plus side, I gave some old shiitake logs a really thorough soaking last week and got a couple bags of excellent quality mushrooms. Here, they are just getting going.
Can’t help you on the diseases, but those shiitakes look good. I have had the logs cut smaller for me so they are easier to soak. I had one set that fruited for 4 years - crumbly bark, looked all done, threw in a pile and walked by one day…more 'shrooms.
I found a few psylla flies on both pear trees a month or so ago. Are you both referring to the red leaves or the curled leaves? I looked up pear psylla and got a few images like this:
Which, to me, don’t look like the leaves in either of my photos. I’ll investigate further to learn how to deal with them.
It seems I overlook things if I don’t know what I’m looking for. Thanks!
Tell tale for me is when growing shoots stop growing and curl up. They are the most persistent pest of pears for me and tempt me to use surround for pears.
Got it…thank you. My trees are all still small and yet sometimes I don’t do the close inspecting that I could. My first leaf on almost all of my trees was last year, and I don’t remember seeing all these blights and bugs. I sure have them now.
Regarding the Hazel bacterial blight, I see it rampant in the native Hazel population and…in other trees: Oak, Ash, etc., young and old; it isn’t just my Dorris cultivar, though that seems to have it worse than all others. I would prune the infected branches but the two main stems both have it…right in the middle.
We did have a very warm Spring, with occasional deluge rainfall. Last Winter could have been spent studying pests but I didn’t think I had any. I have a lot to learn.
