General update cuz I'm excited

Grapes! In progress! Just need the trellising laid out then I’ll buy a good vine (see my other post because I don’t know what to look for there and would appreciate tips).

Blueberries! In progress! I narrowed my choices down to a big ol’ Bluecrop and a big ol’ Elliot, both of which already forming blooms and are a good two to three feet tall (if I’m quick and get the big one I saw today). I might spring for a Sweetheart or two if these work, but those are only at a more expensive nursery for now so I’m not going to bother until I can prove I won’t kill them…Unless I should get one Sweetheart since it self pollinates and see if I kill a single one rather than two at a time…oh no overthinking moving on!

Rhubarb! ACHIEVED! Well, it’s bought anyway - I have to plant it still which means I have to figure out the soil conditions it needs first.

Strawberries! In progress! They just started shipping in (literally off the truck today at one place) so I need to figure out who has what so I can get a junebearing and an everbearing for a dual variety. I CANNOT WAIT.

Raspberries! The single one I had last year - either Jewel or Purple Royalty, forget which one died - SURVIVED THE WINTER so that’s a win! Might get more, but the current one is thorned which isn’t my favorite so we’ll see.

I’m also hoping to pop all the perennial fruiting things into one bed…but I assume they all like slightly different soil conditions. So, I want to make a gradient soil in the bed (if possible) to accommodate them, and put the most amiable plants next to each other. I just have to sort out which is what. Any advice there is appreciated! I could also do strawberry towers but I really don’t want to bring them in in the winter…thoughts on that too!

Anyway I’M SO EXCITED I MIGHT ACTUALLY DO SOMETHING THIS YEAR! It may not be trees ( :frowning: ) but it’s something! And hopefully I won’t kill them! Or at least won’t kill all of them!

Congratulations! I just planted my first Rhubarb ever and they are very vigorous growers. But our 6 year old broke one plant. Have more cuttings to plant now.

We have 16 blueberry plants but they suffered rabbit damage last year.

The wife does Strawberries.

Congratulations to you too! I need to put it in the ground as soon as I sketch out the garden’s overall shape. Good to know about the rabbit damage, how did you protect against it this year?

Cages, a 22LR rifle and we are searching for a rabbit dog…lol…They are relentless. We have some squirrels; but our Barred Owl semi-resident will fix that soon enough.

Hahahaha not a bad option! I don’t know (yet) how bad they’ll go for mine, last year I didn’t get my chicken wire up fast enough so a lot of sprouts disappeared. Unsure what got them though. I should probably put up an owl box…I don’t know if any would want to be around here though, it’s a pretty residential suburb.

Residential does not bother them much. At the current estate sale my wife is doing; there is a huge Great Horned Owl who lives there. Lots of rats feed him well.

Hilarious; he sits in his spot and argues with a pack of Maltese dogs the neighbor has.
