Georgia rattlesnake vs Jubilee watermelon

For those that have grown both- how does Jubilee compare? I’ve been loving GR for 3 seasons now.

A good strain of Jubilee makes fantastic watermelons. However, I have not grown Jubilee since 1995. Some of the watermelons may have a pear shape as a result of poor pollination. Jubilee’s forte is growing and producing in adverse conditions of high heat and humidity typical of most of the southeast. Size tends to be variable with some up to 50 pounds. In 1995, I carried a @50 pound Jubilee in to work and fed about 40 people. Comments stated it was a very good watermelon.

Georgia Rattlesnake makes consistently good watermelons usually a bit smaller than Jubilee. I have not grown them since 1980. IMO, good but not the best I can grow.

Where this gets tricky is in balancing memory of watermelons grown more recently. I’ve had better watermelons of several varieties over the years. Ledmon, Yellow Moon & Stars, Wibb, and Bradford are varieties that hit that perfect pitch of rich intense watermelon flavor combined with perfect sweetness. I am growing and eating Wilson Sweet this year. Heavy rain made the first ripe watermelon almost insipid. We have had 4 weeks of drought so current ripening watermelons are far better. I still would not rate Wilson Sweet in the same class as Ledmon. Wilson sweet beats commercial watermelons hands down, but when put up beside the very best, it is just not quite there.

I’ve been growing Wilson sweet off and on for a few years. I’ve found them to be great early on when it’s hot but past mid September when it cools down the flavor goes away.

I’ve grown Rattlesnake . It is reliable and sweet. But not to the standard of the latest super sweet melons; which I do not care for.

Georgia Yellow Mountain is a small great melon if you can find seeds. The same with Super Redheart Stone Mountain; which only seems to appear in Summer Events at Stone Mountain…lol

But my favorite is Gray Stone. Which has all the flavor of Charleston Gray. But with a ridiculously thin rind. Pretty decent size too.

I thought this was about self defense. We always used a shovel or firearm, but I suppose a watermelon could slow one down

No. Typically I catch the poisonous snakes and release them away from people. Sad to say I have had snakes I liked way better then some people…lol
