There doesn’t really seem to be much info on this species online. I bought seeds from tradewindsfruit and they arrived in a week, but unfortunately they were stored in a plastic bag which is a bit worrying, since i heard drying out severely reduces germination rates.
I searched online and it seems at the latest all pawpaws should be done by late October in all of America. I think considering that, these seeds should have already been cold stratified in a fridge for a sufficient time. I’d hope so at least considering it’s February now and i assume tradewindsfruit store their seeds properly plus on their site they say to plant immediantly.
I tried the float test to see viability but they all are floating, but I’ve seen people say floaters can still germinate and that Asimina has high oil content which can cause them to float. It’s hasn’t been a full 24 hours as well so maybe one will sink? Anyways i am just looking for any scraps of info about this plant, thanks for any help before i sow them.
I just thought it’d be kinda interesting to try and grow one in the UK. I was thinking maybe I could attempt to graft triloba on it and see the effects it has on its growth. Theoretically, parviflora should function like dwarfing rootstocks which are commonly known to induce earlier fruiting, higher quality fruit and it seems better suited for a pot due to its compact nature.
On the flip side though, these species have been in America for a long long time. I imagine someone had to have tried it and considering there is not much information about the combination it probably won’t do all the things I said. Either way, since there isn’t much info about it online I thought I’d attempt it myself and see what happens. It’ll be a fun experiment.
I gotcha, worth trying for sure! I’m not sure itll work that well, but thats the fun of experimenting. In the right conditions grafted pawpaw trees can start fruiting in as little as 3 years from planting. Im not sure its possible to go any faster than that. I have grafted established seedlings and had them fruit in 2 growing seasons after grafting. Heat, and humidity are what pawpaws crave during the growing season. If you do grow one in a pot in the UK some type of small greenhouse or shelter over the tree in the early spring would probably help a lot.
I decided to put 3 in the fridge and 3 on a heat matt. I’m 99% sure they’ve been cold stratified since on the triloba page they say “Seeds are freshly cold stratified” so i don’t see why they’d treat parviflora any different. 6 years is crazy lol, maybe by a miracle one will germinate if you plant them.
