Giant Chestnuts

Thank you so much for the valuable information!

Would these likely work for 5a/5b as well?

All of those from Red Fern Farm are zone 5.
Kintzel works in zone 5.
They all might work in zone 5 but it’s hard to know for sure when you’re dealing with seedlings.

Is there any data on how precocious Emalyn’s Purple is?, or if it’s a heavy bearer?

No data on precocity. It is a very vigorous tree with good productivity and very large nuts. It grafts well on a wide variety of rootstocks.
HARC has it now but it’s still a small tree so they probably won’t have any data on it for a few more years.

Hi Nicola. You have these varieties in Italy? I am in Hungary. Is it possible to get a scionwod from you?

Ciao Dani, si quest’ anno le ho innestate, devo attenzionarle bene perche’ in zona non esiste per il momento alcuna varieta’ del genere, aggiorniamoci a fine anno, tu sei un castanicoltore?

I have started a little orchard with 30 trees. Mainly BdB. I will contact you in december.

Castanea, questo inverno qui in italia dovrei piantare un frutteto di Gillet che impollinatore posso utilizzare piu’ idoneo

Do you have a question?
Hai una domanda?

‘Szego’, ‘Marigoule’, and ‘Torakuri’.

andrebbe bene come impollinatore di Gillett oltre a Szego anche Bournette ?

Yes.

Castanea I have some recently purchased seedlings that I will be attempting in Texas at my home. I am trying to figure out the spacing between trees but sounds like some like Qing are smaller and Szego might be larger than typical Chinese types. So I got a Qinq, Szego and Mossbarger. Last year I also planted an Eaton. I have an unknown Chinese coming from Burnt Ridge as they don’t list any variety name with it. So any idea on the general size of these trees? I have a good idea of a typical Chinese chestnut size but don’t know if all of these grow about the same size except Qing which is a smaller tree I am told. Does Szego get a lot taller and/or wider than typical Chinese trees? Any of these might do better in this hot environment (trying them all since I have them but good to know nonetheless)? I am in the DFW area. These all will be irrigated as needed so no water issues. Do you know the nut size and taste for Eaton and Mossbarger and how they compare? One last thing is I have one 5 year old Chinese and the Eaton I planted last year and they are not growing a central leader, growing a bit in height but lot more horizontal growth. Will this grow into a different shaped tree than those with a central leader or eventually come out looking the same? Can I stake up a branch vertically and make a central leader? Lastly, on the off chance you know about what Burnt Ridge Nursery sells as “Chinese Chestnut” any idea what type? Thanks for any info you can provide, much appreciated.

I would not expect the Burnt Ridge Chinese chestnut to be anything special.

Do you have grafted trees or seedling trees?

These are all seedling trees.

The Chinese will not have central leaders. Most will grow like peach trees. There is no point in trying to give them a central leader.

Yes, Qing is smaller but you don’t have Qing. You have a Qing seedling. And Szego is larger, but you don’t have Szego. You have a Szego seedling. The Qing seedling will probably be larger than its parent and the Szego seedling will probably be smaller than its parent.

It doesn’t matter what Eaton and Mossbarger taste like because you don’t have Eaton and Mossbarger. You have Eaton and Mossbarger seedlings. All of these should have nuts with good flavor but we don’'t know anything about the BR Chinese trees.

What you might want to plant also are seedlings of Jenny, Emalyn’s Purple, Yixian Large, Peach, Gideon, AU Super, AU 1-11 and any of the newer trees from Auburn University which won’t be available for a few years. They would all do well in your area.

Can you pick a great Large and good tasting chestnut with diseases resistance variety for Z5 Omaha for me. Hopefully it is self fertile.

Tony

It is hard to get all those qualities in zone 5.
And chestnuts are not self fertile, but you can plant two young seedlings in the same hole.
Luckily, Red Fern Farm in Wapello, Iowa has some excellent seedlings, especially those from Szego and Luvall’s Monster-

Strange, by internet security suggests the Red Farm link is a dangerous site.
