Going Bananas On Figs

My 100 Plus Celeste figs going in-ground just now to their patch. I figured if I can get 1 fig from each bush that would give me enough fig fix in the fall.

Wow, and I thought my 15 or so in ground figs was pushing my zone. Good luck!

What spacing are you working with? They seem kind of close, once they fill in it’ll be hard to get to the inner plants.

That is a lot of figs. What will you do come winter? Any sort of protection planned?

Tony,
Do you plan to winter protect them? If not, whatever survive, please let us know.

I think they are planted very close, too.

Hello all,

I planted them pretty close like 1 1/2 foot apart on purpose. I wanted to keep them small so I can Winter protect them with wood mulch. After harvest, I will chop them down to 2 feet.

Tony,
I understand your reasoning, but each tree has to grow to a decent size,
before it will produce fruit. I think you’re going to find out the hard way
that the odds are against your plan working.

You’re going banana, not the figs, Tony!

It’s going to be a sight to see comes harvest time…

Tony,

Maybe split them up to 2 rows or 4 quads? That help solves the density issue that others concerned, accessibility and few more extra efforts for winter protection?

Tom

I think I will let them grow for one season and see how they fair out. I can spread them out later if I need to. Right now the roots are too fragile to dig them up.

That is very true, Tony. Out of 100, at least 10-20 may produce something? Do you think you may get some figs this year?

Yes, from the three 6 yrs old bushes. All the newly planted probably not. I want them to grow a strong root systems and maybe next year they will fruit. I pinched my figs every 3 to 4 leaf to stimulate main crop production early.
