New to this forum, so thank you in advance if this has circulated before. I have a new Golden Cherry Tree I planted last fall (bought in a pot, not a bare root) and all seemed to be going well this spring with healthy leaves. I’m noticing that all the leaves are dying. We’ve had a lot of rain in NC recently, so I am wondering if that is the case. Should I leave it undisturbed, or should I dig it up? Open to suggestions or answering questions- I’m new to fruit trees.
Cherries don’t like wet feet at all. How’s the drainage? Do you know the rootstock?
When I dug the hole last fall, it was good quality soil and I didn’t hit any clay, so drainage should be good. That being said, there is a slope to my property and this area is lower end. We had an unusual amount of rain recently, so maybe it was just inundated?
The root system seemed well established when I took it out of the pot for planting and the tree itself was about 6’ tall, so it’s not too young. I’m not sure if I should just let it be this year, or if I should consider moving it.
Looks to me like it had root damage and the transplant shock caught up to it, especially how there is no signs of growth just leaves.
Maybe you could do some heavy pruning? But wait for someone more experienced than me to chime in, before whacking away.
I too have cherry trees and we have had a week of downpours. My cherries look like that when they are stressed. The problems are usually too much water or too little water.
