Hi everyone. Anyone here who have experience with Golden nectar plum? I tried to search on the forum but didn’t get much information. Is it worth to graft or plant?
Here is the description from dave wilson website:
“Popular yellow dessert plum. Large, oblong fruit with waxy, thin, amber skin. Amber flesh is firm, sweet and flavorful. Very small pit. August harvest in Central CA. 400 hours or less. Self-fruitful.”
I have been collecting and tasting a bunch of yellow plums - to me the color is attractive for a plum. Of the ones I’ve grown/tasted so far - Naidyonisch, Inca, Padre, Great Yellow, Golden Nectar, Autumn Gold and few others - I’d rate Golden Nectar the best. Inca is close second and very similar but GN has a special aroma that places it at the top. Some of these grafts are still young and the rankings may change in the near future but that doesn’t change the fact that GN is a great plum.
Thanks for the input. I read somewhere it has a melon taste? Also you have autumn gold? What time do you harvest that? I heard it is early, around May.
Both Golden Nectar and Autumn Gold are ripening now. AG - mostly due to the fact that it is a one year old graft. I should have a reliable ripening time for it next year.
Ah ok i thought it was May ripening for autumn gold. Cant wait for my golden nectar to fruit. I have the 5 in 1 tree from dave wilson and it has been shy producer compare to my other ones but it is only on its year two.
I’m fond of yellow plums myself and appreciate this comparison. We have an Inca that set its first proper harvest this year and we have been floored by the fruit quality. Delicious and huge fruit! I’ll have to be better with photos next time, I think this particular variety deserves to be highlighted.
What’s your thought on chill requirements for GN? We have room for a couple more plum trees!
It is listed as 400 hours by DWN and I don’t have any issues here in San Jose in terms of bloom or fruit set. Emerald Drop is another option and it does well here in terms of bloom. I haven’t found the right pollination partner for it, despite the fact that I have a number of plums/pluots grafted on the tree. The fruit set has been minimal for ED.
Reviving this older thread. I’m trying Golden Nectar in Bend OR in zone 6b. The tree has survived two winters so far without any issues and is growing decently. Haven’t had any fruit yet, but am expecting some next summer, which will be its third. Stay tuned.
