Good time to get your Red Plastic Fruit

I was intrigued by an older post by Alan where he quoted someone using plastic fruit to protect his soon to be ripe fruit ( Can they protect our cherries from the birds?). So I started keeping an eye out for red fruit, or appropriate subs, and found that now is a great time to find them at the thrift stores in the holiday decorations area, at least around here. I now have a pretty good supply. Anyone tried it (hanging red fruit so birds will peck it before your fruit ripens and get discouraged and go elsewhere). Having lost a lot of my first year Black Oxford apples to bluejays this year I’m anxious to give it a try next harvest. I’m ready!

I made decoys out of red glass “stones” and Christmas hangers a number of years back. Used them as decoys in my cherry tree. Worked well, but the wind did knock many of them out of the tree in a storm.

I still have a bag of them in the basement. Maybe I should use them again next year.
