Gooseberries!

Does anyone have a variety of gooseberry that they particularly like?

We have a bush of unknown variety growing on the farm. This year is the first year I’ve ever beaten the birds to them. Eaten right off the bush they don’t taste like much but I was able to make a tart and, oh my, they were wonderful. I need more than this one little bush.

Any suggestions on what variety to choose?

For fresh eating black velvet is quite tasty ripe off the bush

IMO Poorman tastes best, followed by Hinnomaki Yellow and Black Velvet. Hinnomaki Red and Invicta are decent. Birds were a HUGE problem for me this year, even with netting.

Poorman and Hinnomaki Red both have skin with a sour twang…more so than Concord grapes.

Those who like sweet/sour combos might enjoy them…I’d just as soon have Pixwell. My Black Velvet has died before ever fruiting.

I love Poorman, my free bush from Raintree is finally producing, thorny f***er though.

For those with small yards/time the thorns snap off when young/fresh green, makes picking more enjoyable the following year
