Goumi seed germinating naturally in TN

Last year there was a discussion about goumi where I mentioned that each spring I found goumi sprouts in the mulch all around my goumi bushes…

Some thought that was not possible…

Well today I pulled weeds and redid the mulch around my goumis… and found 40-50 of these…

That one with a goumi seed coat still hanging on … pretty much proves this is happening here in TN.

I have has these since 2020… they are not supposed to be invasive in TN. Not sure if they are considered invasive anywhere.

They sure do germinate and sprout up nicely under my goumi bushes.

Birds eat them like crazy.

@Gkight … I think you were in on that conversation last year…

I cant remember who else was.

what variety of goumi are they? i wonder if they grow true to type from seed? if they do i might be interested in a few of them . i already have red gem and sweet scarlet. mainly looking for the bigger fruiting goumis now. birds haven’t touched mine or my cherries right next to it. no one grows either here that i know of so they probably don’t know they’re edible yet.

@steveb4 … those little sprouts are all under my red gem and sweet scarlet bushes.

There is a graft of carmine on each bush that produced several berries last year.

Last year I had tons of intentionally sprouted goumi seeds that I was planning to grow on, but I lost 100% of them to some sort of animal predation. I suspect it was birds since they are my primary destroyer of seedlings here. Those new sprouts are so thick and tender that it’s not surprising something likes eating them…
