If anyone is looking for Cornus mas rootstock, I found some relatively inexpensive potted rootstock at https://www.coniferkingdom.com/cornus-mas-span-cornelian-cherryspantree-pot/
Shipping was incredibly cheap and the trees were nice caliper and well rooted.
Does anyone know the optimal temperature for Cornus mas grafting and callus formation?
thats what Ive been told by others who have tried more times than me. I did a handful a couple of years and had no takes. Would like to try again though. I generally have awful luck with summer budding too, for whatever reason
3 years of grafting several branches a year. I got one take finally. It flowerd this year and I see the odd fruitlet here and there.
If anyone can share some cuttings for summer grafting I would appreciate it.
I tried grafting cornus mas for the first time last year and had 1 take which barely grew but is still alive and leafing out now. The other 4 or so attempts lower on the tree spread through the late spring into summer failed.
I do have a couple new scions to graft as the tree is starting to leaf out now. The plan is to graft to the upper branches this time.
Thats my exact experience. The graft did 0 growth the year the graft took. But it did develop a flower bud and this year its growing like the rest of the tree.
I have a no name seedling variety that sets fairly well, but they’re nothing special; and just planted a small variegata (from Lucielle @ Whitman Farms) that i would be willing to ship if you’d like.
