Grafting Fuyu persimmon into wild American persimmon tree? (picture)

I have a wild American persimmon tree that is male. It got cut down two years ago and came back last year. Can I graft a fuyu persimmon to it? I am new to grafts and have never grafted a tree before

The short answer is “yes”. The long answer is “YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSS!!!”

You definitely want to wait until the tree starts leafing out to graft tho; I’ve had good results grafting persimmons in the middle of summer (with fresh budwood), so later is better than earlier.

I recommend looking into “bark grafting” as the most beginner-friendly & nearly sure-proof technique.

I have to two asian persimmons… IKKJiro and Cardinal… and both are grafted to american persimmon rootstock.

One problem I see for you is getting those cut off flats to heal over.

Good luck !!!

Awesome! I’ll check that out. My other question is will the grafts grow/fruit faster because of the large rootstock?

Any tips for the flats?

Yes, a well established rootstock will grow large & fruit quicker, sometimes too quick & a strong wind, animal, or cluster of fruit will dislodge the graft before it’s healed properly. Staking your tree will help prevent that, and/or pruning some of the growth.

At a minimum I’d recommend recutting those dead sections of trunk so that they’re angled to shed water. If you’re feeling up to it, you could also play tree doctor & graft a strip of bark across the exposed xylem (“wood”).
