Hello!
I would like to graft some improved, named varieties of honey locust. I have seedlings grown and ready for grafting in 2020. Has anyone ever grafted honey locust? Any idea of grafting technique or timing for best success??
Thanks!!

Please report back with your findings and results
I grafted cuttings of ‘Hershey’, ‘Calhoun’, and ‘Ashworth’ obtained from Fruitwood Nursery onto wild honey locusts already growing on my farm. If the caliper was large enough, I used bark inlay grafting, smaller caliper rootstock with cleft grafting. Timing was mid-May (E Iowa, 5a) Basically waited until solid growth of the rootstock had commenced and several days in the 70s to low 80s in the forecast. Success was 100% with both methods (‘Calhoun’ and ‘Hershey’) but poor with ‘Ashworth’ for some reason (just one weak take).
Thanks for the response with your results!
I thought I would add my results. I grafted the Honey Locust the same time I did apples, and did them all as dormant bench grafts. I basically treated them exactly like apples as that’s what I have the most experience with. I did 2 whip and tongue and 2 cleft grafts. The two clefts took and the 2 whip and tongue failed. The sample size is too small to conclude anything much from that. The two that succeeded were both Ashworth. They have been surprisingly slow growing for me, about 3 feet tall now. I also notice the Ashworth has much smaller leaflets and leaves than the generic wild type Honey Locust near here. I wasn’t too disappointed with 50% success rate as I never heard back from anyone on how to graft these best. I was just guessing, so any success was good enough for me.
I do appreciate the alternative system described above, that may be a better option.
