I have a few crabapple trees at the limits of my property. I plan to use those as pollinators for the WineCrisp apple tree that is arriving next spring. However, I would also like to prune and graft some different varieties of apple scions on the crabapple tree. Does anyone have any experience grafting on crabapples? Any feedback on compatibility?

My understanding is that they are compatible but I haven’t tried myself.

i think don1357 tried but they never took. i have 6 cultivars on my sargents crabapple but its a different species of crab.
There was another thread on this a few years ago and @Palmer said this:
He said at that point most of them hadn’t fruited yet, but I’m guessing they have by now. Sounds like it’s at least worth a shot though.

I have some random crabapple trees that I successfully grafted 2 Queen Cox scions to. They grew surprisingly well considering i grafted end of last June.

@starrtraveler29 That’s encouraging. I bought a few scions of Roxbury Russet that will be shipped to me in the Spring. I’m going to give them a whirl on one of my 2 crabapples.
