Grafting Prunus Serotina

This is the Nadia Plum growth so far… (Sorry I couldn’t get it to focus…)

A week or two ago I grafted some extra Japanese plum scions onto wild trees I have around, just as an experiment.

Prunus Serotina
Prunus Avium
Prunus Virginiana
Amelanchier/serviceberry

I’ll report back if anything takes.

Of course they all failed!..

Sorry to hear that they all failed. Prunus Serotina is hard to graft to.

I think there are different varieties of P. Serotina. This past March I grafted several scions of Stanley, AU Rosa, AU Amber and AU Roadside to the local black cherries growing locally. The first three all had high success and are still living. AU Roadside only had about 50% success but the ones that took are still doing fine about 10 weeks later.

Update: the only grafts that I had take were plum on choke cherry. Nothing on serotina took.

There were 3 grafts that took on two different trees. Sadly, one (Toka) just aborted despite having had good growth.

Another tree still has its 2 grafts growing well. We shall see.

Aborted Toka graft:

Tree with 2 good grafts. I didnt label these, could be Toka, or Catherine Bunnell.

A few months ago my landlord grafted some variety of Capulin Cherry onto a huge P. serotina on his property. It’s still growing, so I’ll try to snag some pics & keep y’all updated. Sure looks like they’re compatible tho.

Thats interesting! I know nothing about that cherry. Is it the Prunus salicifolia species? Google is saying it’s only cold hardy to 19F?

Supposedly “most botanists” consider Capulin Cherry a subspecies of P. serotina now. And I’m not sure if Google’s estimation of hardiness is accurate or if they’re just basing that on “native range”. 19F is pretty rare in my current location tho, so I probly won’t be testing that aspect out.

By choke cherry, you mean Prunus Virginiana or prunus Padus?

I has a successful Mirabelle plum on prunus Padus (bird cherry), but the whole tree died, probably it was cut off too late in the summer, it put on about 4 feet of branched growth, but died probably the next year.

The leaves of the original tree if you want to verify/dispute the designation of Prunus Padus

The original graft Apricot, Cherry, and Mirabelle plum, only Mirabelle plum survived.

So I was away and basically everything I know about how it died is from this picture, so it’s unclear to me why the whole tree died.

Mine are on Prunus virginiana, I believe. Bummer that your whole tree died, looks like it had some pretty solid growth before it died.
