Hey I’ve got a question about grape trellises. I plan on building some for grapes I want to plant, and I want to know, how high should both wires be off the ground?
3’ and 6’ is pretty common
There are many trellis options out there, and you can make almost any of them work for you. It may help to know what kind of grapes you are growing, as some grapes produce better on specific trellis systems. I have some grapes on simple T-posts with wires at 3 and 5 feet, and I have a line of grapes around my garden with wires at 5 and 7 feet to help keep deer out of the garden. They are both very productive.
I forgot about an extra set of catch wires I put in to keep deer out. The extra wires help to train the shoots vertical. The vines in the simple 2 wire T-post system are the most productive, mainly because they are extremely vigorous vines. Simple systems can work well.
Beautiful farm.
My preference is to have the wires up high enough to be able to mow under the vines. Usually some variance of the Geneva double curtain thingy.
P.S. - Beware of Pierce’s disease in Alabama.
I agree with mrsg47 especially the pic looking toward the sun! Looks like you have a good collection of grapes. Thanks for sharing, Randy/GA
