Great keeping apple- Wealthy

I had an Wealthy yesterday that had been stored in plastic last fall and it was very good- only the slightest mealiness starting, good crunch, flavor maybe a little milder than last fall, quite juicy, and no wrinkling. It was better than any of mine, including Prairie Spy, which is supposed to be a superior keeper but which has disappointed me. I think that next spring I’ll graft a PS branch over to Wealthy. Should mention that Wealthy is a very good-tasting eating and cooking apple. Dates to 1860, from Minnesota.

Downside, I think, is CAR susceptibility and also canker- otherwise a particularly desirable apple:

This is one of those trees the deer love, they’ve repeatedly devastated my Wealthy grafts. I’m uncertain they left enough to continue growing this spring, but I’ll know soon enough.

I didn’t know wealthy was a keeper. Good to know for when my tree is big enough to store some in the fridge over winter. Thanks

I was surprised too. I don’t think my friend has any special secret; in fact, he stores, as far as I know, exactly the same way I do, in tightly sealed bread bags kept at around 34 F. Maybe he had to pick a little early or something. At any rate, the results were impressive- I hope it works for you, too.
