EDIT; I get probably 850 - 1000 chill hours pr year, depending on the year.
I have a very young Frost and a young Rio Oso. The frost produced it’s first peaches this year- well, last year it produced one, but the birds got it… It’s OK but not outstanding. I also left too many fruits on the tree- the remaining were small. The Rio Oso was just put in the ground this year and is not producing yet.
Can anyone recommend a great rich tasting tangy/sweet yellow peach? Old fashioned flavor? Preferably one good for canning? I prefer a bit more tang especially when the peach is still firm.
I’m at 2400+ ft in the northern California coastal mountains. We get hot dry summers - a week or 3 triple digits, and milder winters but it does snow here 1-3 times. Zone 8b. We do get late frosts some years.
I’m probably going to be looking for something on a semi-dwarf rootstock.
EDIT: so, the town below me at 1,391 ft elevation supposedly gets around 1,000 chill hours pr year which may be inaccurate because warm winter days subtract from chill hours. I’m going to guess maybe 850 chill hours pr year. Add more for another 1K ft elevation and I’ll give a wild guess that I get 850 - 1000 pr year, depending on the year.
Mine did ripen in late July. You did get my correction , that I was talking about Mid Pride not August Pride? August Pride ripened this week, maybe not quite as good but it was its first fruit and the only one. Maybe next year it will be better.
Thanks Linda, yes I did. Yeah, I’m hoping my Frost Free curl gets better too. Pretty meh for a peach. But I think it’s going to be the most reliable. Very prolific- I picked half of the fruit off very early and they are still small. Got maybe 20 off one young tree- first year in ground, I had held it in a pot for one year… Rio Oso is supposed to be excellent but not all years will be good for it. Looking forward to next year.
I’m surprised no one else has responded. Was hoping to get a few suggestions. Choices may be limited here, most of the good nurseries shut down. The hardware stores are better than any nurseries that are left within 50 miles. May have to go to Santa Rosa.
I tasted the first four, but didn’t try O’Henry or Rio Oso Gem. They are all excellent, with intense flavors. June Pride ripens mid season, Baby Crawford and Messina are late mid season, and Kaweah is late.
