Greengage already starting to bloom in Seattle. Is that normal?

If wanted,I could come and graft some on.

Based on my own trees, that is not normal.

At my location Japanese plums are waking up but not any of the Euro plums.

I am no expert so that could be normal in your area?

I am in Northern California zone 8A.

I had heard there was a green gauge circulating that was really a Japanese plum.

The fruit might still be excellent. I never heard what that mislabeled plum really was.

It’s snowing right now, but as soon as I have good visibility, I will take a look at ours for comparison and report back.

Thank you! Yes, it does look like I have been given an Asian plum or hybrid.

Thank you! Now I’m really curious. It’s a prolific bloomer & the only other plum in my garden putting out leaves at that rate is a Methley.

That would be awesome!! I can dm you my address. Thank you again

OK on my work lunch I went to check and all six European plums - not a single green bud.

Eight Asian/Asian hybrids all show signs of life.

I’m not a plum expert, but Fruitwood Nursery does have a japanese and european version of green gage available. Maybe you have the asian one?

I just wanted to tell you that we bought a green gage from Costco and it turned out to be a Spice Zee nectaplum.

I knew something was wrong when red leaves started growing out.

All the experts were telling me that it was the nectaplum and I didn’t even believe them because I looked at the nursery on the tag and they didn’t carry that variety.

Little did I know, nurseries buy trees from other vendors and put their tags on them.

That just shows you what a newbie I am.

Mystery trees are kind of exciting. I hope you get something equally desirable.

Thank you!!

Thank you, that cracked me up!

Now that I am somewhat over my disappointment, it is being replaced by curiosity & excitement. Thank you for sharing this!

I have not heard of an Asian green gage but I’m not an expert either & am looking forward to finding out what I’ve ended up with  Thank you!

Wow! Thank you! This could be it. I’ll read up on it.

i’m not familiar with these trees, but keep in mind that if you bought it at home depot you don’t know the temperature or length of time it was stored at, so that could affect bud break date the first spring

I would be suspicious of labeling for anything purchased at Home Depot. Green gauge is usually one of my last plums to bloom.
