You had mentioned in the past you use black weed barrier, what kind was it, and can you get multiple years use out of it? It would be better than having to weed a lot.
the drought is no joke. CA farming will be hurting badly.
I got a bunch of buckwheat and hulless oats to plant, buckwheat over winter I think then the oats really really early spring. I’m not sure exactly when oats go in but I’ll find out.
already grow sorghum and lots of corn for meal, and trade tattoos at work for local winter wheat/flour. going as local as possible seems to have been a good idea
Guess they’re running out of animal protein in Latvia, take a gander at the label on this protein bar-
Mmm…
At least it’s gluten free…
have you ever had insects for food? my cousin is Rwandan, they bring these grubs from there when they visit (frozen) you fry them in butter and they’re actually really good, kind of popcorn flavor. they feed them a little corn meal for a day before they freeze them. there’s a little meaty ness to them
I’ve had mealworms too as part of a stir fry once and didn’t realize that’s what it was, they were also good.
and of course cricket and such “lollipops” or the spicy dried crickets from novelty shops, which aren’t very good
Some ‘exotic’ foods carry a lot of diseases…rats, bats, even oysters.
chapulines anyone?
mosquito larvae cakes? steamed tarantula? shrimp? with a side of pico porfa hehehe
crab: the spider of the sea
Grasshoppers? No gracias, señor…
Well, it took a while, but we got our bean trellises put up. We have 8 rows of 5 different varieties, but only enough wire fencing for 5 rows. Each row is about 18-20ft, with t-posts on either end, with 4ft high 1x2in square fencing in between.
Got just about all our 38 tomatoes staked and tied as well. They’re looking much better than they did when I planted them out about 3 weeks ago.
Thanks. I had a lot of fencing that was supposed to be for fruit trees, but I stopped planting trees with about 80ft of fencing left, plus I had about 20ft extra after 2 apple trees croaked on me. I also used tobacco sticks in between to shore up the middle of the fencing.
This is the first year we’ve used such trellising, other years they just sprawled on the ground and became a tangled mess with a lot of spotty beans.
Are you growing any beans this year?
Yes but we kept it pretty simple. Nothing nearly as good as your setup. We just ran them up electric fence poles.
I grow 25% of my food for over 30 years, it’s a good hobby, I get plenty of exercises, and fresh produce for my family.
I have a very small lot, 1/6 of an acre, but I have 70 fruit trees, 160 roses, and over 100 peonies. It can be done even if you have a very small yard.
yep. i do it in much colder area than yours but on 3/4 of a acre. im still adding/ subtracting things and learning what works and what doesnt. have over 60+ types of fruit, nuts and many more medicinal herbs and flowers. have 4 potted citruses on my deck right now that are put on south facing windows in the winter. they do surprisingly well.
Growing / raising your own food is especially important in the current times, as we will no doubt continue to see ever increasing food shortages and rising prices in major part due to imposed regulation in accordance with published global agendas (including dietary limitation/control) such as in the Netherlands where govt recently decided to close many farms and ranches in accordance with policy to drastically reduce nitrogen and ammonia emissions, and that of Sri-Lanka where non-organic farming was essentially banned overnight resulting in crisis there.

Awesome!
A lot of late corn and soybeans in Kentucky looked doubtful 30 days ago…but now they
probably make a normal or above-normal crop. Tobacco looks fine too.
I have a wheelbarrow sitting outside near the chicken shed which I use when I clean out the shed. It was empty 3 days ago. As of yesterday, water was spilling over the edge from rainfall. We had about 8 inches of rain. My watermelons are benefiting with some of them adding 2 inches of diameter since Saturday.
