Growing loquats in the Pacific Northwest

This year is looking good for loquats.

These are a variety I never tasted before:Sugarcane.
Adam Karsten considered it maybe his best variety. Atleast top 3.

Of the 3 I got from him, Sugarcane is the only that hasnā€™t since died. Iā€™m looking forward to your report.

Have you heard of a variety called Marini? I got it along with Angelino, Yehuda, and Dr. Moy from One Green Worlds scion sale.

Never heard of it. Have to ask Sam about it.
I have Dr Moy but it has not fruited yet. And didnā€™t flower this year.
Argelino is a solid high quality producer.

Excited to hear if it lives up to the hype

Have you tried ā€˜Ellen Markerā€™? I had just seen photos of the fruit, they look huge for loquats.

I just got Ellen marker this year. Itā€™s been hard to get outside Florida.
Hope atleast one of my grafts take

Iā€™m seeing one of my varieties - not Shambala or Novak starting to put out new flower buds now -in March! Iā€™ll check the label later but it is definitely a cool one to grow! It also had earlier flushes and even has fruit! So it is definitely a multi-flushing variety.

Anyone growing Strawberry Loquat and know how the fruit compares to Gold Nugget?

I am growing strawberry, and itā€™s fruiting this year. However Iā€™ve never had gold nugget so I wonā€™t be able to answer the second part haha

Ok thank you!

I have sugarcane, it tasted good, not excellent. I donā€™t think any of Adamā€™s variety was in my top 5. But I didnā€™t taste his Michael loquat (MPJ-4), my grafts died. Also did not think his Sunset was outstanding, just average like a Big Jim.

Thanks for piping in, George.
Since we didnā€™t get so cold this year, it will be a great year for loquats. Usually Argelino and Kanko are the best, this year I have many other varieties also producing including my own seedling.

Unfortunately none of yours yet.

Yes, hope this year is better than last year. I see a lot of fruits on all my varieties now.

Also since the early varieties did so well here in the PNW, Iā€™m thinking the fruits are more hardy than open flowers. So maybe early AND late varieties are great for our area.

I placed an order from him last spring before I found out he hadnā€™t shipped any scions in years. Luckily I got my money back, good to know some people have some of his varieties as it seems like they receive high praise.

Are loquats hard to graft? Will you be offering scions soon or did i miss it?

Very easy imo

I have scionwood for trade or sale.
They are easy to graft.
