Growing loquats in the Pacific Northwest

I haven’t been inside the actual zoo since I was in middle school! You probably can’t just drive past this area, huh?

Not at all, i have some half off tickets if you want them?

I’ll message you.

Hello. Has anyone ordered from Secret Orchard? I’d be tempted to go buy stuff in person next time I am in Portland, but their location appears to be… secret.

They sell loquats. Loquat Obusa (Eriobotrya japonica) – Secret Orchard Nursery

I ended up getting 3 loquat from OGW. They’re decent sized. I also got two quince. Everything else I get will be scions, because I really need to spend my money on things like eyeglasses and truck repairs, not trees.

I have a place I’d LIKE to put the loquat, up against the front porch, but I worry about whether the deer would decimate them immediately. Anyone have deer pressure with their loquats?

My tiny seedling Loquats seem to be surviving the SE PA Winter so far. The mandarinquat seedlings planted next to them are clearly toast.

I know rabbits destroy them so I bet deer would do the same.

Yes.

It’s bad.

OK, you’ve convinced me. I keep planting things near the house and they keep getting eaten, so I guess I need to put rosemary there, because they leave it alone.

Anyone know what’s going on with the loquat leaves? The ones i bought from one green world are dying. I came back home in December and found them all like this and declining. I’ve tried removing the leaves but it didn’t work with Dr Moy and now i think Dr Moy is dying because the tips are wilting too.

Seeing the same on one of mine, though with the warm weather last week the progression is further along

Weirdly, the other plant I have that’s this size, which was kept under the exact same conditions, is perfectly healthy and looks ready to burst into growth here soon.

Doesn’t look like cold damage, not sure what it might be.

I’ll have to look, but my impression is that my loquats are doing better than in past. The first time they’ve gone through winter pretty much unscathed, and put on a little growth.

I’d assume the damage is from cold and be concerned if it doesn’t put on new healthy looking growth as we go into spring.

My guess is that the roots of loquats are sensitive to frost. If they are in unprotected pots and are exposed to a hard freeze, they might die back.

This one had the same protection and same exposure. Really odd how different it looks.

Mine have brown on the edges of their leaves, too.

The thing is, the ones that were dying are only the ones bought from OGW and they were in the garage/protected most of the time. The ones I grafted from Ram and Restoring Eden have been mostly outside/in the cold and are looking great. Even the 1 gallon ones that i haven’t repotted yet  I’ll take photos of them later today to show the difference.

Been outside unprotected

Hmm ..so they’ve all been in pots, under the same conditions?

Another possibility is root-rot if those particular pots didn’t drain well with our winter rain.

Hopefully they bounce back.

Yeah I’m at a loss. The thing is, the dying ones were brought inside a period of time during the freezes we had and the ones left outside in the rain and freeze are okay overall.

I’m wondering if they can possibly get fireblight

They can, yes.
