Guidance on grafting Che to Osage Orange

I have some Osage Orange twigs that I grew from seed last summer. I also received some Chinese Che scions that are same diameter.
I want to take off the top of the OO and replace with Che.
Any guidance on when to do this? (fist sign of growth or before)
What is best graft technique (maybe whip and tongue)?

I grafted some last year in late April while still dormant. I think I used my cheap grafting tool on most of them but may have also used whip and tongue. Most of them took and the few that were in the ground put on at least 18" of growth. This is my only experience but they don’t seem to be too picky.
