Doesn’t seem likely, I think they can generally handle much colder than that. My three goumi seedlings showed zero damage from our winter low of about -10°C. I would guess some kind of root pathogen, but I’m not familiar with any that impact goumi. Have you pulled out the roots and inspected them yet?
Just had a good look, and couldn’t see any obvious damage to the roots. It had a huge rootball and very well developed, although not that deep, but proper thick roots spreading out in top foot of soil.
Could be something fungal, there was a strange ring of dead grass around the bush after slight drought last summer. I’m trying to remember, I think it might have even defoliated early last year. Maybe it died to drought and has been dead all winter not dormant.
I’m not too upset that was a prime spot and I’m not so sure on the nitrogen fixer permaculture-y arrangements I used to be in to given my limited space.
my 2 goumi have taken -30f no problem but the -40 3 winters ago killed them to the roots. they’re back to 6ft tall now and should fruit this year.
ahh… you had it in a pot. i think it was a combo of drought and cold that did it in . a exposed root ball above ground makes it less hardy by 2 growing zones. so a z5 hardy plant in ground is only z7 hardy in a pot, unless the root ball is heavily mulched or covered in snow.
It’s not a pot just a ring shaped section of barrel I use as a barrier because I let the grass grow long.
I can’t remember well but the dead surrounding grass was kind of mysterious and maybe a fungal cause as they all used to be mulched with woodchips that were constantly sprouting mushrooms.
I do remember that goumi yellowing and defoliating early.
It was also a somewhat mysterious cultivar, I wonder if it could have been a less hardy eleagnus or hybrid.
My first persimmon is flowering! Lots. It’s the one trained as a candelabra in my tunnel. Probably a bit late for anything to ripen this year.
Nikshoo = Nikita’s Gift x Taishu.
I think they’re male flowers, right? I guess that got passed on from Taishu.
Flowers forming again on the Nikita x Taishu hybrid persimmon in my tunnel. But this time it’s at the right time of year! If I can get it to fruit I may be the first in Ireland?
My ‘kazakh apple’ Malus Sieversii is also flowering for the first time. This is the one from pflanzmich.de source.
I’ve never heard of / saw that breed. are they excusive to Ireland?
I think it’s originally a Czech cross. Sussex paternal by Barred Plymouth Rock maternal. Also goes by Dominant Black D149.
They’re big, these point of lay pullets are already bigger than my previous Blackrock hens when fully grown. I think the markings are stunning.
They’re a bit similar to the Bluebell which is also a large hybrid.
Added:
- Fernor walnut
- Fernette walnut
Both precocious late leafing lateral bearing types. Planted in the same hole to replace a 5th leaf do nothing (still 3ft) black mulberry.
- Bouche de Betizac sweet chestnut (placed close to marigoule)
- Nottingham cobnut (placed in hedgerow)
Has your Denniston’s Superb plum fruited for you? Any information you can provide about it, such as taste, vigor, or bloom timeframe?
It never fruited. I took it out and replaced it with an Opal Plum which hasn’t flowered yet. Can’t remember the exact reason, sorry, I think maybe disease.
