Half ripe/unripe blackberries — redberry mites?

I grow thornless Black Velvet blackberries and thornless Olallieberries in the cooler part of the Bay Area, and this season a lot on both plants are fully ripe at one end and very unripe at the other end. The internet would have me believe that I have a redberry mite infestation, which would be a drag. Or maybe this is not pest related but has to do with growing conditions this year? Anyone familiar with this condition? If this really is redberry mites, I wonder if I could eliminate them by cutting the plants to the ground (since apparently the little buggers overwinter on the plant itself)?

The berries in the images have a drupelet color pattern like that caused by redberry mites. Perhaps you could thump some fruit and plant material in a black container and see some of the light-colored mites.

If the whole crop looks like a loss, them removing all the fruiting canes and using a spray regimen on the primocanes next year will help. Early varieties like Columbia Star are less susceptible to the mites.
