My 7x Great Grandfather William Powell died August 27th, 1776 at the battle of Long Island/Brooklyn, he is buried in a mass grave somewhere in that vicinity that no one ever discovered (lost to time).
This is the Monument in Prospect Park that was dedicated to those soldiers, with these words inscribed from George Washington. “Good God! What brave fellows I must this day lose.”
Happy Memorial Day Weekend, indeed. Freedom wasn’t and still isn’t free.

I had the honor of going to Normandy last month and walking
on Omaha and Utah beaches, and seeing most of all the battle
areas. While visiting the Omaha Beach Cemetery, which is immaculate, one of the many things that our guide pointed out to us was how all of the trees had their tops cut off, to symbolize
all of the lives that were cut short. They played taps while we were there, and the tears rolled down my face.
We’ll be glued to the TV set, when President and Mrs. Trump represent all of us on June 6, the 75th anniversary of D Day.
If you never have been to Normandy, you need to go. It should be on every American’s bucket list.

I went to France in 2002, and spent some time in Normandy. We took a tour of the British beach at Arromanches, Omaha Beach and the American Cemetery, and Pointe du Hoc, where the US Rangers scaled a cliff to secure a German gun emplacement.
It was a very touching visit, especially at the cemetery. Seeing all those monuments was moving. We didn’t have a lot of time there, but I just happened upon a marker of someone who was from a unit that was based in the town I grew up in, that brought it close to home.
Also, I was imagining the contrast of looking upon that beautiful beach that day, with the surf softly lapping onshore and the breeze in the hedges, and the sound of kids playing in the sand, and compare it to the unimaginable carnage on D-Day. Makes you very grateful for what they and others did.

We spent 3 days there and hired a private guide to take us around
for 2 days. Saw everything you mentioned and so much more. An
experience I’ll remember for the rest of my life.
While we were there, we saw a number of French school children, whose teachers took their classes to the different sites. Made me wish that every American school kid could have the same experience.
