Just wondering if anyone on here has any hardy kiwi cuttings that will be available this year (or plants).
I’m looking for a solid male pollinator for my anna, ken’s red and issai. I have a meader but it always looks off. I really would like a flowercloud (@kiwinut) as i’ve heard great things.
The only caveat is I am in SoCal so if any of these varieities wont work please let me know.
Also, do you all know when these start showing up in grocery stores? I’ve never actually had them before but fuzzies are difficult to grow here with my low CH’s (<150hrs). My wifes favorite fruit is kiwi
I am totally willing to pay for plant + shipping or whatever.
My Flowercloud has just gone dormant. I can provide some cuttings, once it has accumulated some chill. It’s really easy to root in water. It is perfect for Issai, but not sure if it will bloom with the other hardy females. I would think the bloom periods will be different in your low chill climate than colder climates, so you may have to do some testing to see how they do for you.
The answer for me is rarely or never. We do get yellow kiwis in grocery stores fairly often now, so making progress.
I would think that in places where hardy kiwi are in stores, September through November is the best time unless they are imported from New Zealand.
My potted kiwis struggled this year in the heat, but my anna’s that is in the ground in almost full shade is doing fantastic. I was reccomended to grow a cordifolia as well but not sure.
Would love to hear what you’d think would do well in my zone 10B
Sorry to butt in here. I"m wondering if Kiwinut (@kiwinut ) still might offer a cutting of Flowercloud? I cannot find it anywhere now, OneGreenWorld says that the farm they used to get it from isn’t offering it. I would be willing to pay. Thank you!
My Flowercloud is still fairly small, and also pushing buds, so I can’t take any more cuttings from it right now. It should put on good growth soon, so I will try to let it put out some longer canes for budwood next winter. I can also try to root a few green shoots if I get enough new growth. It’s not very vigorous, but I’m moving it to a bigger pot, so that should promote more new growth.
I have two male hardy kiwi varieties, Meader Male and Smith 2. Meader took awhile to bloom, but does so reliably and for a good duration every year, the bees love it too! Smith 2 seems more precocious, so I’m glad to have both
Oh! Thank you. I think I should probably just get a regular male hardy kiwi. I had just seen it on One Green World and had an idea it would be a good mate for my Issai. But it sounds like it’s not sure vigorous.
