They are scions I grafted. I do not care for Bramley. But a lot of folks love it. So I added them.
Oh, gosh, lots. Honey and black locust, pawpaw, service and Saskatoon berries, pacific and strawberry madrone, vine maple, Northern California walnut, butternut, mulberries, elderberries, red alder, chicory, California poppy, vetch, and dandelion (two of the latter 3 are deep tap rooted, one just pretty, and one a nitro fixer).
i have about 60 b. locusts seedlings up right now. they are a variety bred in hungary for strait lumber production. im going to plant some of them up at the orchard up the hill. the rest ill give away. ill up pot them and offer them next spring to anyone on here wanting some to try.
My problem currently is that just as I had settled into what I felt was an appropriate number of backyard trees at 15, my neighbors cut down six mature healthy Douglas firs. Huge bummer for shade and tolerating city life in general, and more so because they separated my lot from a parking lot and very busy road.
The associated problem is that now my yard has significantly more sun, such that I no longer have an excuse to stop planting fruit trees ![]()
I could now easily plant 10-15 more trees, plus another 5-10 espaliered. Iām not sure if thatās enough to make selling some fruit at the local farmers markets worth all the other effort that is involved in going hobby-commercial. But itās an option so now I have to think about itā¦haha
Edit: I have to clarify- it later was shown that the Doug firs were in fact not doing that great and kind of needed to come down. They had been buried 2 ft deep over the root crown at some point decades ago, and despite surviving a 100 mph windstorm the year prior, the āgreenā wood was so dry inside it was able to be split by hand immediately after cutting (in the spring).
Photo of seed received today! Nice instructions on each packet. If these come up, weāll add growing trees from seed to my obsessions!
I had something similar happen to me. My neighbor cut down my entire lower orchard. He is brown , furry, big bucked teeth, flat tail and eats only wood. Wish you saw the look in my eyes when i saw those trees. I wished he would have been a few feet away. He built his home out of my trees! Now he is squatting on my property.
sorry to see that Clark. unfortunitely beaver see fruit trees like candy. they are fairly easy to live trap and relocate or if youre so inclined, injected with hot lead. they are so overpopulated here even the wardens dont catch and release anymore. they use traps that get emā underwater and drown them. luckily you will have plenty of volentiers to graft to next year.
Iām by no means experienced, but Iām so excited to have a place to learn and ask questions and THEN talk about everything I learned with people who understand it! I was trying to explain cultivars of blueberries to my husband and the poor man just wanted me to pick some and put them in the ground!
this site is definitely hallowed ground for diehard fruit lovers. most people have no idea. most of our kind died off nearly 100 years ago. im honored to be here.
Yes. That is usā¦lolā¦You Peopleā¦who grow fruit.
I think a lot of trades and skills have died off but itās not impossible to be revived - I know many of the younger generation have interests in land and homemaking and such, to the degree that I really hope it takes hold and they become a little more independent and knowledgeable about working the land. Weāll see I guess!
its up to us to inform anyone thats interested. too little folks really take the time nowadays to take someone under their wing to help foster a love of growing our own food.
Mine is turning into an obsession.
2 years ago i planted 6 trees. I now have 25.
The issue with moving that quickly is āyou dont know what you dont knowā. I think if i did it again, id have done a more commercial style planting, centered around dwarf trees, thats easier to mow around rather than my checkerboard style that seemed like it would be pretty in the summer.
I was at the local big box store that had a snowsweet apple with a good structure and was actually labeled by the nursery with a rootstock. 40% off made it come home with me for absolutely no reason. 24 trees wasnt enough.
This must be how women are with purses.
Welcome, and way to make me laugh. Happy growing number 25.
I know better than to count anymore. Then I can honestly tell my wife I dunnoā¦
I got a clearance apple tree I didnāt need. It was late bareroot and the only one left at a small local mom and pop hardware store. Itās kinda pleasing to me. It had Arkansas black on on and I have wanted that for a while. But the second bonus graft was Lodi. Knew nothing about Lodi. I learned itās a white/transparent flesh apple. So crack me up black and white apple tree. So fun.
I have since grafted Clarkās crab to it too. Happy lil tree.
Anyway, welcome to this collection of silly fruit growers. Look out. ![]()
Yes, but I am old school. I get chemistry lab books. Journal by type of fruit. lol
Like to add notes like precip for the year, first and last frost, fertz I did, what set well, what set bad, bugs that popped up. Etc. 19years and counting at this site.
Normal and necessary! Once you start grafting youāll need separate sheets for apples, pears, etc. And then columns for each year. This is a helpful winter activity, too, as you peruse the catalogs to see what you might be able to squeeze in next season.
Welcome to the forum!
I draw my orchard out on paper sometimes. I dont need a map i memorized it.
It is beyond obsession, which is ok, in my mind, but my finances donāt match my abilities, desires, and goals.
I have been fortunate in many things I have accomplished and have several things I hope to leave with my three children on methods of fruit growing and mostly on greenhouse design in our mountain basin grassland in west Texas.
I canāt believe greenhouses are still using designs that are nothing more than a giant plastic oven that people desperately try to cool down enough to keep from frying their plants, even if they live as far north as Canada.
My main goal is to build the greenhouse I have designed before my time on this planet is up.
As I said, finances are the only hold up,even though the cost is very low compared to purchasing any greenhouse kit I have seen to date.
I do have a rich Uncle, but he is surrounded by many relatives attached to him like a starving tick.
