Hazelnut air layer and planting

Before removing from host tree.

Less than desired roots but I think it will be okay.

Plans are to keep it water during dry times.

Thanks and good luck with yours.

Did you have to score the bark, add rooting powder, or just put the potting soil over it? You’ve got me interested in trying it.

I put these on while the tree was dormant and all I did was remove the buds. Probably would have rooted faster if I had scratched and added rooting hormone.

By removing the buds, do you mean the ones covered by dirt only or all but the very top one?

Yes. Just the ones inside the bottle.

Thanks. Sounds like another experiment waiting for me.

If I were to just go to Walmart and buy some soil, which should I get, potting soil or starter mix?

I don’t know if one is any better than the other but I think I used potting soil. If I have any old pots of soil I prefer to use it for rooting as most of the fertilizer is leached out.

Very nice results!
Another angle on this method is de-leafing or de-branching. Are you going to do any of that?

I’m not sure what the question is. My current plan is to single trunk this tree.

OK…I mean once the branch is ready to remove from the ‘mother’ tree, do you cut the top back some to balance the little roots and big top?

Topping probably would be a good idea but I only removed the side limbs.
