Hazelnut issues

hey folks. i finally got around to separating my hazels from the dried husks harvested in sept. 2 questions to those that grow them. the hazel weevil found my bushes. i lost about 20% of my nuts. had holes in them. they rarely infect our native beaked hazels but the americans dont have a solid husk and they have easier access to the nut. anyone ever have to spray for these and if you did when and what did you spray with? also does anyone have a expedient technique to sort the dried husk from the nuts? most of the nuts fell free but some clusters had to be crushed to release the nuts. my trees are getting more productive and i planted a lot more so i have to find a quicker way to separate them.

i found out that beneficial nematodes put around the bushes will attack the beetle in the ground if dispersed before they migrate into the trees in late may. will also attack other damaging grubs like junebug/ jap. beetle larva.

What sort of nematodes were they and where did you buy them?

And did you lose the nuts after using the nematodes? The 20%.

i just discovered the holes in the nuts today cleaning them from the husks. they likely only hatched once i had harvested and brought them in so hopefully there isnt much left under the trees. ill be buying the nematodes from walmart in the spring and putting them down as soon as the snow melts. they come out of the soil and move into the bushes at the end of May. they are called beneficial nematodes and they target any in ground larva and beetles like weevils. it came up on a search.

How much ground does one “container” of the nematodes cover?

Says 1200 sq. ft. its $46.
