No membrillo here:( Thats why I need to travel. Yes, imitation serrano Ibérico. Not fattened on bellotas, but rather avellanas. Mmmm
its one of my favorites. easy to grow. beautiful. delicious. i make a nice batch of membrillo every year. this year is the exception. i was really surprise when my quince bloomed profusely after the hard spring frost we got, but alas the reproductive organs themselves must have been fried. great show but no fruit…
its easy to grow from cuttings (hint, hint)
Anyone know how long hazels will store in the shell?
1 yr+ in shell at room temp. 70*
Several years frozen.
Important to note, that Monmouth has been downgraded to “pollinizer” status due to production output issues. Besides, it propagates poorly invitro and there are few numbers.
Hunderton, with its biennial tendencies also considered to be phased out for production reasons. Super nut though. I’ll keep it high density since it’s upright, trim it that way and foliar feed it. So far, the real main crop winner is Raritan. Im waiting for the release of the others.
Found somewhere selling 2 foot improved american seedlings. They are in 25 packs for $50.
I’ve had good luck with Euro seedlings, but anyone have experience with improved american seedlings? I just keep thinking they will revert back to their small nut size.
I have one mixed into my hedge, it’s pretty good for vigorous growth and I plan to cut and bend it next year to start sprouts on it as a start for hedge row. no nuts yet but I think they come ripe soonest and possibly will satiate the endless squirrel army before the bigger ones are ready?
the hybrid american hazels, though not as big as their pure euro cousins, can still put out good sized nuts. depends on what was crossed.
How do well Nitka and Photon compare with the Rutgers selections? It’s been a struggle getting a few when they’re in stock.
Sorry, I don’t have either one of those.
If you’re up north make sure to protect against SW injury by painting trunks even (specially) when small.
Some of z’s prodigy series have produced nuts for me after 3 yrs, and several have been notable in either copious pollen shed or the nut releases all at once early in the season. Its wise to have some diverse genes for back up pollen, but ultimately its a gamble in terms of nut marketability. I would consider those as clonal pollinators that have been evaluated already. Cold tested.
Gotcha, I don’t necessarily need super cold hardy. We got -4 last winter during a polar vortex event but overall pretty mild in the Ohio river valley southern IN/KY. Mainly wondering if you thought the nut quality was compareable.
Have any of you saved/stored hazel pollen and used it on later blooming varieties like Theta? My situation is that I have an unknown variety that is shedding pollen now and will stop soon. I would like to save some pollen and hand pollinate the Theta when it blooms. Can the pollen be collected and frozen for a few weeks?
Not sure but it’s worth it to collect the pollen in a small, sealed tupperware in fridge. Or cut the whole catkin, maybe. It would be intersting to see if cutting the catkin would help t keep longer…
