Hazelnuts 2025

I don’t think it’s a stretch to think that.
If you don’t know what to do with it you always use it in trades, or be generous to someone .

If they are in close proxiity to a tree, they could be suckers.

There are suckers all around the tree/bush but these are nuts that I picked from it and planted in a large pot. The nuts I planted were small and hard.

I’d swap for maybe a dozen if you want to set up a trade.

No problem. I will put you down for 12.

I haven’t ever grown hazels in a pot (20 gallon) before but assuming that they do well I will dig them up when they go dormant and send them out as bare root gifts. I don’t need a swap, so ask if you want them. No shipping charge these are on me. I will go in order of request until they are gone. Thanks

Lewis and Clark have the most developed leaves right now.

Casina and Ennis are next in development.

Hall’s Giant is last in the race, budding up now.

All appear to be similar in size/age.

I’m just throwing that out there in case this information becomes useful to anyone else and also I often have gone back to find my own notes here later.

American seedling update. Possible hybrids

will the American, Jefferson, etc put out suckers? long term I want to try to coppice them along leading to the greenhouse, but they’re still fairly small. hoping they leap this year.

might fertilize just to get more leafy growth and height going.

I can only speak about my one and only American hazelnut. It is about 3.5 years old now. The first year there was no suckers. The 2nd year several suckers emerged and the third year it was like a pin cushion of suckers. My hybrids like Jefferson also puts out suckers but not as many as the Americans.

I’ve got a pair of each, so hopefully at least one puts a few out!

Going to have my first real crop of Hazels this year, Theta is loaded after 5 years in the ground, Jefferson is too after 4 years, Sacajawea has some and so does a Finger Lakes Abundant

Love how carefree hazels are compared to everything else

only issues ive had with them was last year at age 7 nut weevils showed up and ate 1/4 of my nuts. i treated under them a few weeks ago with beneficial nematodes. hopefully they take care of them for me.

Thats my plan next time it rains.

Is that a one and done or do you have to reapply each year?

the package says to apply several times during the summer, until the problem goes away. id think once a year for a few years should be good unless you know you have alot of them.

Just came in from evaluating the hazelnut progress. Happy to say it’s going to be a MASSIVE hazelnut harvest this year. A late cold spell crushed the fruit potential of most of my fruits, so I at least have this to look forward to.

its too early yet to tell on mine. i had to treat the soil under them in apr. because last year 1/4 of my nuts had holes from weevils. hopefully the nematodes take care of them. got some 12-14in seedlings grown from nuts given to me last winter. one parent is the ‘’ beast ‘’ from grimo. should be some large superior nuts from them in another 3 years.

I’m impressed with the seedling ‘finger lakes abundant’, from Z’s I believe.

It is growing very fast, is suckering like crazy (might be a bad thing if it keeps up), seems to have a good set of nuts which are significantly larger than any others this early in the season. Jury is still out on the quality of the nuts
