Congratulations. Your hazels are doing better than the ones I have in Alabaster AL. I don’t have any of your varieties and I’m looking forward to some updates later this season.
Seems like hazel season is going to be super early here this year. I remember seeing catkins and flowers before the new year.
7b southern IN.
I noticed the first hazelnuts on my bushes today. The oldest are 4 years old.
I’m kind of excited that the effort might finally start to pay off with food.Wahoo - I have 12 or so clusters on my Jefferson planted in 2022 - its first year with nuts. Here’s my attempt at getting to actually harvest at least one cluster. I might even make more, next time I find myself sitting around with tinsnips in my hand and nothing to do.
We do what we have to do to get a few ripe hazels. I started out with about 10 but they recently dropped. I cracked them and they were empty.

Water or N shortage during late spring? Hows your weather been? My Wepster is a champ in heavier soils and is very shoot blight resistant. Not sure what organism it is, but as aoon as it hits 70, my low lying Raritan and Hunderton loose all new growth and previous years branches unless copper sprays are employed. Pretty fussy. Mean while the hybrids and OP seedlings breeze through the bug.
Have you emailed Tom Molnar? He was super responsive when I first learned of the Rutgers breeding program and sent me lots of great information, convincing me to get some of them in the ground here in Pennsylvania. He’s also giving a talk at the NNGA convention this coming Saturday in MA in case you’re attending, you can ask him directly!
Thats one issue he referred to last year in the FB expo. I have over 1000 of them so… yeah.
Sounds familiar. Last year I had a massive crop that was stolen by animals leaving me with nothing but blanks. Wild how they know which ones are blanks.
My Hazels got water stressed and I’m hopeful it won’t affect things too much ![]()
