Help me kill caterpillars!

A week or so ago I noticed just about every leaf on my pear trees had a hole or two, and I chalked it up to some obscure disease or a pest that I couldn’t see. Today I was walking by them and I heard something; I paused, and realized that it was the crunching sound of insects eating. On closer inspection I realized just about every leaf had between one and five tiny green caterpillars eating away! Omg!

I must have smashed a few hundred by hand, but there are literally thousands if not tens of thousands more. What would your weapon of choice be??? Help! We have a lot of beneficial insects, so if there is a caterpillar specific spray, that would be great!

Bt spray

For a low-grade organic insecticide, BT is great for east of the Rockies, but Spinosad has been shown to be more effective in southwestern biospheres.

If these are army worms, then you’ll need a medium or heavy duty insecticide.

I don’t think they’re army worms…

Chew pattern is typical of various sawfly larvae. If your larvae has legs on every body segment, they are not caterpillars. Bt will not control sawflies.

I suggest checking the UC IPM site for Pears. You might have California Pear Sawfly for which it recommends Spinosad.

I think you’re right, that’s the conclusion I came to last night. Spinosad should be delivered tomorrow, war time!

I dropped the Spinosad bomb last night… Silence this morning, no more chewing. Thanks all!
