Trev,
The bark on your Red Hickory is very much like what I have on the one I’ve tentatively IDed here - almost intermediate between mockernut & shagbark. The mockernuts… typical ‘diamond’ pattern
I agree with Darrel, that the bark in the OP’s pics is not at all typical of mockernut… though the nuts look like it to me, and the ‘fuzzy’ leaves are supportive of that ID>

I’d like to take both of you down to Selma and show you some nutmeg hickory. ID’ing one will drive you nuts. My best guess is that C. Myristiciformis is hybridized with other species in the area.

Last summer we discovered what we think may be a hickory sapling and put a cage around it to keep it from being browsed. This spring the leaf buds are fattening up and are an intense yellow-green color. Anyone know if the chartreuse buds are a potential ID for a specific hickory variety? It’s a surprising find for us as there is no hickory on any of our properties. Here’s a pic of the leaves from last summer, I don’t have a current pic of the buds. If you think we misidentified it that would be helpful too!
