Receive this muscadine grape as a gift. Not sure how I should go about pruning it. Ison video shows that I should prune and let it reach about 4 feet and tip it so it can form a y and spread down a trellis wire. But mine has so many branches and so low. Should I keep just two of the longest vine and tie it up? Thanks.
That’s exactly what I’d do. Pick two of the best ones and cut the rest off.
You could choose two of the longest vines but I always pick one and train it upward as soon as I plant it. One vine getting all the energy should grow faster than two or more sharing the energy. My goal is to get the vine up and down the wire as fast as possible and I think one gives the vine the best chance. I encourage you to look at Greg Ison’s YouTube videos on this process again and he also covers how to fertilize the vine for fast results. I haven’t grown Paulk but I think it will be a very good variety.
Thanks for the replies! Since my trellis is only a foot away And I am growing it in container, I will use two of the longest vine and prune the rest.
Like @Auburn , I would not choose 2 branches, just choose one…the longest one.
Keep all side growth/buds pinched off so that you only allow it to grow from the tip. Once this single vine gets long enough to reach your trellis wire (assuming you have a typical trellis), affix it to the wire and then allow one of the side buds nearest the wire to grow a branch outward that you would train down the wire one direction while the original main branch goes down the other direction.
I planted three vines last spring and selected 1 branch on all. Worked great with Black Beauty…shot down both sides of the wire. The Lane’s were much more sluggish reaching the wire and resisted creating side buds until very late but hoping they’ll take off this year.
I have a Paulk coming this Spring. No idea where to put it but I couldn’t stop myself from pulling the trigger when they came back in stock.
Been growing muscadines over 30 years. Choose the strongest runner and cut all others. When it reaches your horizontal level to run the vine keep two to run your laterals.
